Five titles published by Kogan Page have been shortlisted for this year’s Management Book of the Year prize. The Chartered Management Institute (CMI) and the British Library revealed the shortlist last night. Kogan Page has more books on the list than any other publisher.

The shortlist for the overall £5,000 prize – sponsored by Henley Business School – reflects and offers guidance on the challenges professional leaders face in managing multi-generational workforces increasingly shaped by technology and engaged through ethics.

A record 156 books were entered into this year’s competition across five categories: Management Futures; Innovation and Entrepreneurship; Practical Manager; Commuter’s Read; and Management and Leadership Textbook. The winner of each category, as well as the overall winner, will be announced at an awards evening at the British Library on 6 February 2017.

Shortlisted in the Management Futures category, Data-Driven Organization Design by Concentra CEO Rupert Morrison helps companies use organizational analytics to design and implement the optimal organization. Big Change, Best Path by Warren Parry, a managing director at Accenture Strategy, also has been included in the category. His book uses fifteen years of research, predictive approaches and empirical benchmarking to manage organizational change with wisdom, analytics and insight.

Inclusive Talent Management, by Stephen Frost, consultant and former head of diversity and inclusion for London 2012, and Danny Kalman, consultant and former director of global talent at Panasonic Corporation, has been shortlisted in the Practical Manager category. The book reframes how to think about talent management, diversity and inclusion, holding up a mirror up to current unfair practices and providing best practice examples.

Through innovative coaching exercises, self-assessment exercises inspirational interviews with international CEOs and underpinned by rigorous academic research, The Trusted Executive by John Blakey gives leaders the tools to build trust. Shortlisted in the Commuter’s Read category, it takes account of the ever-changing, increasingly diverse and multi-generational work environment, and is an essential tool for leaders who want to create a positive long-term legacy.

Shortlisted in the Innovation and Entrepreneurship category, Building a Culture of Innovation by Beswick, Bishop and Geragthy presents a practical framework that managers can follow to design and embed a culture of innovation in their business. The authors have created a structured process to make change stick, from assessing an organization's innovation-readiness to leading a managed change process that will foster innovation at each level.

Commenting on the shortlist announcement, Kogan Page Managing Director Helen Kogan said: “We are thrilled to have had five titles shortlisted for the Management Book of the Year prize. This is an incredible achievement for the company, especially as we will be celebrating our 50th year in independent publishing next year. We look forward to seeing what happens at the awards evening in February”.

Our shortlist directs everyone in the profession to those books that will make a definite difference to how they think and act as true management and leadership professionals. Phil Spence, Chief Operating Officer at the British Library and a Companion of the CMI, said: “The British Library is honoured and thrilled to be hosting the CMI Management Book of the Year awards again. Not only are we the UK’s national research Library with a world-class collection of management studies resource, but also we have a long and successful relationship with CMI and are delighted to be supporting them in their mission to develop management and leadership.”
