Tyron
Runflat, inventor of the world’s only multi-piece rubber Runflat tyre protector andheadquartered in Leicestershire, is marking Tyre Safety Month this October by sharing key advice for road users as the winter months draw in.

The Department for Transport (DfT) found in its “Reported Road Casualties Great Britain” annual report for 2023that there was a 29% increase in KSI (killed or seriously injured) casualties due to tyres, from 147 in 2022 to 190 in 2023 – the highest figure for KSI casualties due to tyres since 2018.

With these findings in mind, Tyron and its team of specialists who have created a product which keeps a vehicle moving to a safe place after a blow out or puncture, is further urging all road users to consider the safety of their tyres and take simple action to prevent road traffic accidents.

Peter Simson, Director at Tyron Runflat, comments:

“As Tyre Safety Month is upon us, we are taking further action to share the importance of tyre maintenance. This is anything from checking the depth of your tyre treads to regular tyre pressure checks. However, we’re also here to share the possibility of going the extra mile with tyre safety as we make it our mission to raise awareness for tyre and puncture safety, ensuring your car is safe for your family to travel in.

“Without realising it, we’re all constantly at risk of tyre punctures and stopping in the middle of a motorway really isn’t a safe scenario. That’s why we believe that our Tyron Multiband should be fitted on all civilian vehicles to provide car users with a safety buffer.

Peter added that he and his team were confident that the
KSI tyre related figure would decrease quickly if all vehicles were fitted with Tyron technology. He said:

“Our band ensures that if a tyre is punctured, the tyre will be locked onto the wheel which helps the driver remain in control, so that individuals and families can reach a safe location to have their tyre changed and continue their journey. The band is fitted between the wheel and the rubber tyre of a car to ensure the wheeldoesn’t come in contact with the road and instead locks the deflated tyre in place, giving enough time for users to get to safety. We know this product saves lives and we want more road users to be aware of what it is and how it works.

In 2023, it was
reported that 47.6% of breakdowns on UK motorways and A-roads were due to tyre malfunctions. This high level of tyre related road accidents supports the requirement for further safety precautions to be taken on modern vehicles.

Peter continued:

“Despite the large proportion of traffic accidents being linked to tyre malfunctions, preventative measures aren’t often taken to reduce this figure. That’s why we’re on a mission to showcase the importance of Tyron Multiband and the life changing difference it can make when people experience a tyre puncture.

The
Multiband Runflat isn’t all about getting car users to a safe place, it’s a lifesaving piece of equipment. In the UK, between 2013 and 2022, more than 1,800 people were killed or seriously injured in accidents caused by tyre faultswhich helps to show why the Multiband is extensively used by the police. Since its invention in the 1970’s, all UK police sprinter vans have been fitted with the Multiband, proving this equipment is worth civilian investment.

Peter added:

“The Multiband can be the real difference between life a death for many – not just for the original user but for all road users. Poor road conditions coupled with poor tyre management can lead people into a dangerous situation, but with the use of the Multiband, this can all easily be avoided.”
