David Wilson Homes has made a £1,500 donation to Hope Food North Birmingham, a charity dedicated to supporting those experiencing financial hardship and, as a result, food poverty.

Hope Food North Birmingham was founded by and is totally run by volunteers with the mission to support local people in Sutton Coldfield and Erdington. Altogether, the charity supports as many as 500 people each week that are struggling with food poverty.

David Wilson Homes’ donation was made as part of The Barratt Foundation, which is designed to support national and local charities, large and small, across the UK to leave a legacy in the communities in which the housebuilder operates.

The contribution from the leading housebuilder, based close to the charity at its development Tenchlee Place, has been dedicated to helping local people currently struggling with the cost of providing food for their families.

The donation will go a long way towards funding its services. For example, the charity will buy as many as 200 tins of beans per week to be distributed, which will be handed out at its three local foodbanks. David Wilson Homes’ donation will allow the charity to buy over 3,500 tins of beans, which would cover 17 weeks of cost.

Julie Busst, Volunteer at Hope Food North Birmingham, said:

“Hope Food provides family bags of long life tinned and packaged food for families and gives out smaller bags for one to two individuals. We also offer healthy fresh food including fruit, vegetables, eggs and bread at every weekly foodbank session.

“Another of our services is a small food delivery service to local isolated and disabled people, and to homeless people in temporary accommodation who may not have eaten that day.

“Our food donations come from surplus supermarket supplies and donations from schools, charitable sources, individuals and businesses. Our role in providing consistent accessible fresh food through our three local foodbanks in North Birmingham is underpinned by our strong commitment to reducing the amount of waste food which ends up in landfill.”

In the most recent 2023 figures according to Birmingham City Council, 72,932 people in Birmingham were given a food parcel by a Trussell Trust, and 16% of households in the West Midlands face food poverty.

Dominic Harman, Managing Director at David Wilson Homes Mercia, said:

“Hope Food Birmingham North does a fantastic job for its local community, and we continue to be inspired by its commitment to providing people with essential support.

“As a leading housebuilder, we do our best to help charities in the areas close to our developments, and it’s vital that we work closely with local people to see how we can best help them.”
