Aston University’s EuroSim team has returned from this year’s event with a special award.
EuroSim is an annual international intercollegiate simulation of the European Union (EU). The purpose of it is to provide a framework for a simulation of the EU decision-making on major current issues. Usually, more than 150 students from 16 universities in North America and Europe participate in the simulation.
All students are assigned roles, including members of the European Parliament (MEPs), members of the European Commission, heads of government and national ministers. This year Mohammed Abdul Mumin won the Most Valuable Contribution from a Journalist award for playing the role of Zoe Kleinman (BBC News Europe) and was one of seven final year Aston University students who took part.
The Aston University students participating are prepared ahead of the event as part of their degree course. They study for a negotiation skills module (EuroSim/ModelUN) which teaches them about the inner workings of the European Union, United Nations and world trade organisation (WTO) during practical, hands-on sessions.
This year EuroSim was hosted by the University of Antwerp and the STRATEGO Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence from 2–5 January 2025.
Dr Patrycja Rozbicka, a senior lecturer in politics and international relations who is the lead for Aston EuroSim and was European associate director for EuroSim experience (2019-2023), said:
“Here at Aston University, the EuroSim module is one of the most innovative modules of the Aston Politics and International Relations Department’s undergraduate and MA programmes.”
Mohammed Mumin, who’s studying BSc Politics with International Relations, said:
“EuroSim teaches real life, applicable skills, without side-lining the academic aspect.
“It is the only module I know of to do this, and the foresight and training it’s given me in regards to practical skills, is invaluable when preparing for the real world.”
Feni Patel, who’s studying BSc Politics with International Relations, added:
“I found the module to be a dynamic and engaging experience that bridges theory with practice.
“EuroSim has sharpened my negotiation skills and highlighted the importance of active listening, further enhancing my communication abilities. The ever-shifting strategies of the debate challenge you to decide: will you checkmate or be outmanoeuvred? This module pushes you to grow and reveals the best in everyone—unlocking a side of yourself you rarely see!”
“I would therefore recommend this module to anyone seeking an opportunity to push themselves outside of their comfort zone!”
