Newbury College marked the conclusion of National T Levels Week on Wednesday 04 December with an informative open event, drawing in students and parents keen to explore these new qualifications. Combining academic understanding with real-world industry experience, T Levels equip students for promising careers or further studies at university.

Visitors met with curriculum staff, current students, and employers to explore a range of T Level options, from Digital Support Services to Building Systems Engineering in plumbing and electrical installation.

Sarah Mackfall, Industry Placement Coordinator, who was also present, highlighted the importance of the mix of class and work-based learning:

“These placement opportunities are tailored to suit the needs of businesses and students alike, offering practical exposure to real-world work projects and tasks. By working closely with employers, we ensure that students gain the hands-on experience and mentorship needed to excel in their chosen industries.”

What are T Levels?

T Levels are two-year qualifications equivalent to three A Levels, specifically designed to meet the needs of employers whilst equipping students with the skills to succeed in the workplace. A key feature of T Levels is the industry placement, where students gain essential insights and build professional networks in real workplace environments. Students spend 80% of their time in the classroom and the remaining 20% on an industry placement relevant to their chosen course.

Benefits for businesses

Supporting T Level programmes provides employers with a unique opportunity to shape the future workforce. By participating in these programmes, employers can ensure that students gain practical, hands-on experience that aligns with industry standards. This not only helps bridge the skills gap but also allows businesses to identify and nurture potential talent early on. Engaging with T Level students can lead to a pipeline of skilled, work-ready individuals who are familiar with the specific needs and culture of the company.
