A Geo-Environmental Engineer from Birmingham has been chosen to represent his country at the American Football European Championships on Sunday 18th September. Thomas Levick, 28, took up the sport in 2006 whilst at university in Durham and since then has gone from strength to strength, now set to play against Russia this weekend at 7pm on Friday 16th September.
In anticipation for the championships, which are being held in in Worcester, Thomas, 28, has been training with British Military Fitness (BMF) in the Colmore Plaza classes in Birmingham. He will take up guard position in the GB team, whose job it is to protect the quarterback and move people out of the way of the running back.
He commented: “American Football is something I had never really thought of playing before I went to university but when I spotted it at the Freshers’ Fair, I thought it looked great. As soon as I tried it, I knew it was the sport for me and since then I have had the chance to play alongside some inspirational players. It is an absolute honour to play for Great Britain in the European championships and I can’t wait. It’s not been easy to get here but I have enjoyed every second.”
“BMF has been instrumental in my training for the championships. I always feel better after a workout. The high intensity interval training of BMF always supplements my other workouts - it’s so different to the others. The instructors are fantastic and help make it a varied and challenging workout. I also find that having a BMF session during my lunch break helps improve my mood and my productivity”.
In anticipation for the game, Thomas, who plays primarily centre for Tamworth Phoenix and now as guard for the international Great Britain team, says: “The atmosphere at BMF is exhilarating, the internally driven competition from other members is fantastic. The support from the team always pushes you harder than you ever would push yourself if you were to workout alone”.
Thomas’ Great Britain teammates have also started to see a change in him since starting BMF sessions. Thomas adds: “I frequently get compliments on the level of ‘hustle’ and effort I bring onto the field. I have no doubt in my mind that this is mostly due to the BMF sessions. They have been fundamental in keeping my conditioning up and supporting my strength training to make sure I am able to perform on an international level.”
