From September 2019, the Ofsted Early Years inspection framework will undergo a significant overhaul across England. This new framework has been designed to rely less on data and look more into whether a nursery is providing children with stimulating and effective learning and development opportunities. Consequently, nurseries all over the country are putting measures in place to ensure the next inspection results they obtain accurately reflect the quality of care they provide.

One company with expertise in this field is BB Training, an ‘outstanding’ graded national training provider in the care sector, based in Staffordshire. Part of the Busy Bees Group, BB Training offer best practice advice to those involved in Early Years care and deliver apprenticeships, CPD courses and accredited qualifications.

One of the fundamental changes to the Ofsted framework is the terminology used, something that will be key for nursery staff to understand in order to implement any changes required. In response to this need, BB Training has uploaded a number of free online videos to its website and will be sharing a number of free ‘question and answer’ sessions via webinars taking place throughout August. These sessions will be hosted by an industry expert to ensure any topic or language causing confusion can be instantly addressed.

Understanding the requirements of the new inspection framework is something that will be intertwined in a suite of foundation courses currently offered by BB Training, namely ‘Getting it right first time - Leaders’, ‘Getting it right first time – Practitioners’ and ‘Quality Teaching and Learning.’ These will be linked to a number of add-on courses that focus on specific areas of need such as managing children’s behaviour and safeguarding. The focus of these courses remains best practice and as such they are suitable for staff with wide ranging levels of experience.

Consultancy packages tailored to settings that need to improve or have struggled to achieve ‘outstanding’ status before will benefit from these up-to-date changes, as will those with self-reflective action plans already in place. Well-being of staff is high on the agenda currently, with more attention being placed on the effects of stress on employees than ever before. Consequently, resilience training and support will also feature more prominently in training courses, ensuring staff are happy and equipped with all the tools, skills and knowledge in order to get it right for children first time.

Ann Poolton, Head of CPD Courses at BB Training, says

“With a changing curriculum it is important that nursery staff are confident in what they are teaching and why they are teaching it. Understanding the changes to the Ofsted inspection framework is essential, but it is important to recognise this is not a box ticking exercise. Good intent combined with thoughtful implementation will result in positive impact. The training we provide revolves around children and a shared passion to provide the best platform for their future life successes”.
