Balancing Career And Family: Leicestershire Sales Manager On Industry Diversity

A Field Sales Manager at Coalville-based David Wilson Homes is highlighting the importance of encouraging more women into the housebuilding industry as part of this year’s International Women’s Day.

Mercedes Gill (31) joined the developer in 2014 as a Trainee Sales Adviser and has since progressed to a senior role, managing sales teams across multiple developments, including Fernwood Village and Hunters Place at Fernwood Village near Newark and Callendar Farm in Nuneaton.

International Women’s Day is focused on the theme #AccelerateAction, which calls for increased momentum in achieving gender equality. According to the World Economic Forum, it could take until 2158 – five generations from now – to reach full gender parity.

Reflecting on her own journey in housebuilding, Mercedes said:

“I was looking for a career rather than just a job, and the industry appealed to me. I was also drawn to the sense of pride that comes with selling a product that people can truly call home.

“Being promoted to Field Sales Manager has been my biggest achievement so far, but it hasn’t been an easy journey. Balancing a career and a young family can be challenging, but I want to provide for them whilst also setting an example of what’s possible.”

As part of her role, Mercedes oversees sales performance, supports team development, and ensures that customers receive high levels of service.

Last year, her efforts were recognised with an Individual Excellence Award for her work on contracts, forecasting, and the implementation of key processes such as David Wilson Homes’ Kickstart scheme.

When asked whether she perceives the housebuilding industry as male-dominated, she acknowledged that some aspects of the sector have traditionally been led by men but believes that change is happening.

Mercedes continued:

“We are seeing more women take on roles that they may not have considered in the past. To accelerate action, we need to continue promoting career growth for women and ensure that all environments are inclusive.”

Mercedes believes that having a greater number of women in the industry adds value and diversity in decision-making.

She added:

“Men and women may view situations differently, and that’s an asset. It’s important to encourage and support each other, especially in industries that have historically been male-dominated.”

After more than a decade with David Wilson Homes, Mercedes credits the developer for offering a strong support network for women throughout their careers.

She said:

“I’ve been through many personal changes over the years, and the company has always supported me. I’ve been encouraged by both male and female colleagues to follow the career path I want.”

Her advice to women considering a career in construction is to not be discouraged by the perception of the industry.

Mercedes added:

“While it may seem male-dominated at times, there are many women in the industry achieving just as much as their male counterparts. It’s about finding the right opportunities and knowing that you have a place here.”
