Barratt and David Wilson Homes are continuing their positive work to support local employment, by creating 14 new roles to develop talent across the West Midlands in the construction industry.

Barratt Homes West Midlands, which is based in Halesowen, aims to recruit six new trade apprentices specialising in bricklaying or carpentry and joinery to work across its developments. Solihull-based David Wilson Homes Mercia is also looking to recruit eight apprentices in the same fields.

The vacancies were announced as part of another successful National Apprenticeship Week, which took place between 7th and 14th February and celebrates the benefits of apprenticeships for individuals, businesses and the wider economy.

National Apprenticeship Week was a celebration of apprenticeships across England and a time to recognise and applaud apprentices across the country.

Throughout its 15 years, National Apprenticeship Week has brought together apprenticeship supporters from across the country with MPs, ambassadors, apprentices, training providers and top employers involved in recognising the value and importance of apprenticeships.

Dominic Harman, Managing Director at David Wilson Homes Mercia, said:

“The construction industry is continuing to grow and this is an exciting time for anyone with an interest in housebuilding to join a market leading company.”

Adrian Evans, Managing Director at Barratt Homes West Midlands, said:

“As the country’s leading housebuilders, we are absolutely committed to developing raw talent and I believe that we have a duty to provide these kinds of apprenticeship opportunities.”

The new trade apprentices, who start in September, will be based on a housing development in Barratt and David Wilson Homes’ operational areas of Cheshire, Herefordshire, Oxfordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire and West Midlands. They will learn skills in bricklaying or carpentry from experienced tradespeople for four days a week.

They will also spend one day a week at college undertaking a qualification in their chosen field.

All programmes are well structured and tailored to individual needs. Apprentices will receive encouragement, support and guidance to help them develop, giving the skills and qualifications for a successful career.
