Lake District tea and coffee merchants John Farrer & Co, Kendal, are pleased to announce that they have been awarded one 2-star and two 1-star Great Taste awards.
- Two-star award for Colombia La Cabana Coffee
- One-star award for Burundi Kibingo Natural Coffee
- One-Star award for Ethiopia Haru Washed Coffee
All of which takes the team’s total number of Great Taste awards up to 15, equating to 18 stars since they first entered in 2020.
The judges’ comments on Farrer’s two-star awarded Colombia La Cabana Coffee:
"This has a bright aroma, with a lot of fruit on the nose and hints of tamarind sourness. On the palate, the fruit comes through strongly with powerful tropical flavours, and a tamarind follow-through, with a clean citrussy finish. As it cools, the fruit intensity increases, moving towards darker fruits such as raisins or prunes."
"Winey and fruity, and a lovely dark chocolate nose. The berry fruit is prominent and liqueur-like. For its style though, this has a great depth of flavour and really delivers."
"The rich fermentation is announcing itself even in the beans. The ground coffee offers an even richer aromatic note with strawberry impact. The flavour is many things: wine, strawberry and fruit complexity, with wine notes and underlying clean coffee."
Each year The Great Taste Awards celebrate the very best artisan and specialty producers. This year was no exception with over 13,672 products submitted to this year’s awards, from 115 countries around the world. Judged by 500 of the most discerning palates, belonging to food critics, chefs, cooks, restaurateurs, buyers, retailers, and producers, as well as food writers and journalists, Great Taste is the most coveted of all food and drink awards.
Che Oxenham, Farrer’s Production Manager and Head Roaster, said:
“We take great care in sourcing our artisan single-origin coffee. Buying specifically from small growers and farmers around the world. Individuals who share our ethos – taking great care in nurturing the crops they grow, using sustainable growing techniques, whilst also putting back into their local communities, creating jobs and educational opportunities to enable farmers to earn a real wage in their communities. Farrer’s has been sourcing and roasting quality coffee for over 200 years and we all work incredibly hard to ensure that we continue to deliver. Receiving three new Great Taste awards in the shape of 1 two-star award and 2 one-star awards demonstrates what we are about and the fact that we take pride in creating products for people to enjoy.’’
