EarthSense, the Leicester-based air quality expert, today announced that it has been awarded a certification to ISO 27001, the world's best-known standard for information security management systems (ISMS).

The ISO 27001 standard provides companies of any size and from all sectors of activity with guidance for establishing, implementing, maintaining and continually improving an information security management system. Conformity with ISO 27001 means that EarthSense has put in place a system to manage risks related to the security of data owned or handled by the company, and that this system respects all the best practices and principles enshrined in this international standard.

ISO/IEC 27001 promotes a holistic approach to information security: vetting people, policies and technology. An information security management system implemented according to this standard is a tool for risk management, cyber-resilience and operational excellence.

In addition to the implementation and maintenance of an ISMS that is independently certified as compliant with ISO 27001:2022, EarthSense is also committed to a range of measures to optimise cyber security throughout the company and for all of its clients.

These include:

  • systematic identification of security threats and the application of a risk assessment procedure that will identify and implement appropriate control measures
  • regular monitoring of security threats and the testing/auditing of the effectiveness of control measures
  • the maintenance of a risk treatment plan that is focused on eliminating or reducing security threats
  • maintenance and regular testing of a business continuity plan
  • clear definition of responsibilities for implementing the ISMS
  • provision of appropriate information, instruction and training so that all employees are aware of their responsibilities and legal duties, and can support the implementation of the ISMS

Dr. Roland Leigh, CTO of EarthSense, said:

“With cybercrime on the rise and new threats constantly emerging, it can seem difficult or even impossible to manage cyber risks. ISO 27001 helps organisations become risk-aware and proactively identify and address weaknesses.

“These certifications reflect the company's dedication to maintaining high standards in information security and managing data risks effectively. It is important to focus on cyber security, especially for organisations that work with customers in sectors more commonly targeted for cyber-attacks such as local authorities. We are committed to ensuring information security throughout our operations and this latest certification is a major step forward to help us achieve this.”

This latest certification joins the company’s existing ISO 45001:2018 Health and Safety Management certification, ISO9001 Quality Management Standard certification and ISO14001 Environmental Management Standard.
