As a fellow business leader, I speak to so many other business leaders and managers, about their biggest asset, their people!
82 percent of leaders and managers in the UK have had no formal training, and 1 in 4 have management responsibilities. Research has shown that 60 percent of leaders and managers who are not trained, lack confidence in their abilities to do their jobs, deliver results and require further development.
Leaders and managers with no formal training are 'Accidental Leaders/Managers'.
Many are promoted because they are good at their job, probably the best at doing the job. However, there are many traps that accidental leaders fall foul of. Getting others to do what we are very good at without training is very difficult. It's a very different skill set.
Accidental leaders and managers are in most businesses. The following is usually the path to the accidental management.
We call it the 10 steps to accidental management!
- Person performs well in their technical role
- They then excel in this role
- They then hit ceiling for development and earning's in the role
- So, the Business promotes them to a management role to reward performance (fear of losing the person to another business is a factor)
- The person enters management role with the skills that made them good at the doing and no management training
- Because of this they don’t have the knowledge, skills, management tools and techniques to perform effectively
- Therefore, they revert to the doing of the role for all people underneath them (they still want to prove they are great at the doing and want to show you they are still good!)
- Business loses their most skilled person in the doing role, becoming less efficient
- Ineffective management needs senior leader involvement and manager becomes disaffected
- Potentially the manager leaves, is demoted or employment is terminated
Sound familiar? Don’t worry, most businesses we speak to fall into this accidental management trap.
Research from the CMI and YouGov have identified the following areas of ineffective management.
- Ineffective managers have a deep impact on employees’ motivation, satisfaction and effectiveness.
- 50 percent of employees that say their line manager is ineffective are likely to leave their jobs.
- 82 percent of leaders and managers have no formal leadership and management training.
- Technical competence is wrongly valued over management competence, in management roles
- Untrained managers are damaging organisational culture, productivity and staff wellbeing.
Research also shows that business performance areas are positively impacted with formal management training in the following areas.
- Meeting objectives
- Creating a positive work environment
- Fostering a positive culture of innovation and improvement
- Staff retention and happiness
Good management tells the story of improved productivity, and previous CMI research has shown that organisations that invest in leadership and management programmes see on average a 23 percent increase in organisational performance, and a 32 percent increase in employee engagement and productivity.
This qualification is CMI (Chartered Managers Institution) endorsed and will give your leaders and manager Chartered Managers Institute accreditation.
The programme consists of 6 taught sessions where the following areas are covered in a group setting with either other members of your organisation or those from different organisations.
Both have huge benefits of either collaborating internally or externally.
- Leading people - Leadership styles and how to implement different approaches dependent on the situation
- Managing people - How to manage different people (internal or external) effectively, the way they will respond best.
- Communication - Ensuring that people are communicated with in a way that they want to be, but more importantly, so that the communication has the desired impact that was intended.
- Building relationships - How to build high performing teams internally and how to foster long lasting relationships externally.
- Project management - Prioritising time and resources efficiently whilst managing and working towards the project goal.
- Operational management - How to plan and to be more proactive rather than reactive. Many managers are accidental managers and technical experts in their field. Problem arises + managers solve = very busy managers. Management should be just that, not doing the jobs of those they are managing.
- Awareness of self and others - How to be more self aware and understand the impact that behaviours have on others.
- Decision making - How do people make decisions in the workplace? Are they based on facts and data and are they consistent across the organisation?
Following the taught sessions, the employees have a coaching session to help implement each area in to their individual role and the wider business.
